A new year has arrived. Some of you have made resolutions while others have long since abandoned this often self-defeating practice. You may want to consider setting an intention for yourself instead.
Setting an intention is not the same thing as setting a goal or making a resolution.
A resolution is simply a decision. A goal is a specific outcome we want to achieve by a predetermined time. Goal-setting is a left-brain activity where we outline steps we’re going to take to achieve our target, and then we implement the actions we’ve chosen. We control the whole process.
On the other hand, intention-setting is a right-brain activity that begins when we connect with a heartfelt desire.
Sometimes that desire becomes clear during meditation, sometimes it shows up out of frustration from experiencing its opposite, and still other times it seems to pop into our heads ‘out of the blue’. Once we know what we intend for ourselves, we release it.
We let go of how it’s going to happen and believe that it’s going to manifest. That the Universe will begin organizing people, ideas, and events to show up in our life and guide us toward our desire. No need on our part to control the details; we simply follow through on anything that feels aligned with our intention.
And now the fun part. Allow it to show up in unexpected ways. My husband and I once set an intention to find a new house and were devastated when the purchase of what we thought was our ideal home – perfect location, price point, lake views – fell through. As tough as it was to let go, we continued to believe that the right home would show up for us, and we talked about how great it would be when that happened. Eight months later we were living next door to that ‘ideal’ house, in a home that was an even better fit for us.
Steps to Setting an Intention
- Identify your desire.
- Let go of how it’s going to happen.
- Believe it’s going to appear.
- Take action that feels aligned with the intention.
- When it comes to mind, think of it joyfully.
- Allow it to appear.
Manifesting an intention for ourselves is something we feel more than do. An interesting challenge for left brain planners and controllers. A welcome reprieve for right brain dreamers and creators.
Happy Intention-Setting! May your manifestations in 2018 bring you joy.
